How to create an online store in Nigeria
Short answer
Pick a platform that sells from the same stock as your shop, add your products with clear photos and prices in naira, set up online payment (for example Paystack for cards and transfers) and decide how customers receive orders, pickup or delivery. Then share one store link everywhere your customers already are: WhatsApp status, Instagram bio and your receipts.
Decide what the online store is for
For most small businesses an online store is not a separate business. It is a better way to take the orders you already get through WhatsApp, Instagram and phone calls, and a way to reach people who find you outside opening hours. Start with that goal: let existing customers see what is in stock and order without a long chat.
Add products people can buy from
- Photos: natural light, a plain background, the whole item, then a close-up. A phone camera is enough.
- Names: what a customer would type, such as "Bone straight wig, 22 inch", not internal codes.
- Prices in naira: the real price. "DM for price" loses buyers who are comparing.
- Options: sizes, colours and lengths as variants, so customers pick what they want and see if it is in stock.
- Descriptions: material, size guide, what is included, care. Answer the questions you get asked most.
Set up payments
Customers in Nigeria commonly pay by card, bank transfer or cash. Online, a payment provider such as Paystack lets customers pay by card or transfer and confirms the payment automatically, so you do not have to check screenshots against bank alerts. Offering pay on pickup as well helps customers who prefer to see an item before paying.
Decide how orders reach customers
Pickup is the simplest to run: the customer chooses a branch, you prepare the order and they collect it. It avoids delivery costs and failed deliveries. If you deliver, agree a delivery fee and timeframe upfront and confirm the address before dispatch.
StockỌja online stores currently work with pickup from your branches: the customer gets a pickup code by email and you hand the order over when they arrive.
Launch it where your customers already are
- 1
Put the link in your bio
Instagram, TikTok and your WhatsApp Business profile.
- 2
Use it in your status
Post a product photo with the store link instead of "DM to order".
- 3
Reply with links
When someone asks "do you have it in black?", reply with the product link.
- 4
Print it
On receipts, bags and the shop window.
Run it day to day
Check new orders a few times a day, confirm them quickly and tell customers when they are ready. Keep stock accurate by selling everything in the shop through the till, and update photos when new stock arrives. Our guide on taking orders online covers the daily routine, and the Nigeria page covers payments and branches.
Questions
Do I need a registered business to sell online in Nigeria?
Requirements depend on your payment provider and how you trade. Payment providers such as Paystack verify businesses before paying out, so check their current requirements when you set up online payments.
Do I need my own domain name?
Not to start. A store address such as yourname.stockoja.com works for sharing on WhatsApp and Instagram. A custom domain can come later.
